Collaboration
In creating hand made glass each piece is individual and unique but there is also another approach which can be undertaken.
Simon trained to be a production glass maker, either using moulds or by hand, with the straightforward aim of making the pieces uniform. He states that this gives him the satisfaction of seeing dozens of identical pieces. This ability to master the very different approaches to both individual pieces and production runs sets him apart in his discipline.
The aesthetic of repetition is fundamental to this side of his work and the skills evolved from this has created many collaborations. Bombay Sapphire Gin, Curiousa Lighting, Ochre, Salviati (Murano) and Crystallite Bohemia (Czechia) to name a few. Designers and Architects such as Peter Mikic and Anthony Collet have also employed Simon’s skills in several diverse commissions and Vessel Gallery not only supports and stages his work but has also commissioned him to create individual versions of pieces for them.
The combination of varied thought processes and skills creates a collaborative effort resulting in a deeper understanding of the clients expectations and wishes. Simon can rely on his comprehensive experience as a glassmaker, artist and studio manager to resolve any creative and production problems which may arise.
